Bucket Fillers

Yesterday at Kindy we read a book called, Have you Filled a Bucket Today? It is a fantastic book that we will be using a lot this term. As today was the first time we have spoken about it, the children are still developing a good understanding of what it really means.

The story teaches children to be Bucket Fillers and not Bucket Dippers. The kids can fill up someones bucket by doing or saying something nice. Everyone carries around an invisible, magic bucket. You can't see it but when it is full, you feel happy and when it is empty you feel sad. We talked about things they could do fill up someones bucket. The kids said we could give cuddles, help out, smile, share our toys, draw pictures for friends and say nice things to people.

The more we talk about the concept and read the story, the more you will probably hear your child using the term Bucket Filler or Bucket Dipper. If anyone gets their bucket dipped into, we all talk about ways to fill their bucket up again.

We also made buckets out of construction with Layla's mum. Just in case you were wondering why they brought home a bucket. We have also started a new positive reward system where everyone gets a 'bucket filler card' to keep in their teddy box (not bring home). When they are bucket fillers throughout the day, we will give them a stamp and when they receive 10 stamps they can bring their card home with them and pick a prize from the prize box.
